Charlotte is many things. She was once known as the Duchess of Wyre, when she held the Queen’s highest confidence and used her scientific expertise and technological inventions to keep the Queen’s royal heart beating. But afraid her inventions would be used to commit terrible atrocities, Charlotte arranged, with the help of the infamous assassin, Lord Sigmund Regret, to fake her own death and then ran for her life.

She spent the next seven years hiding in the Americus colony, trying to stay under the radar of the Queen’s bounty hunters. Her life is further complicated by her relationship with Lord Regret, who’s kept alive by her nanotechnology and Sheriff Gilead Masters. Both men want her and neither wants to share.

Her life spirals out of control when the Americus planetary colony declares its independence and hunters arrive to take Charlotte back to the Queen. Tired of hiding and living without the luxuries she grew up with, she sends a pointed message to the Queen and court. Leave her alone or suffer the consequences. Now, in addition to trying to outrun the Queen’s anger, she needs to keep her men alive and make sure they don’t kill each other.

Lady Doctor Wyre is the first release in Joely Sue Burkhart’s new series A Jane Austen Space Opera and it’s the first book by this author I’ve had the pleasure of reading. I’m totally impressed with the extensive and complicated world-building in this quasi-steampunk, alternative history, sci-fi/futuristic gem. I know. It’s hard to believe but Ms. Burkhart managed to create a story that easily fits into all of these genres without a problem, because there are elements of all blended seamlessly into the cohesive whole.

I can’t say enough good things about the originality of her characters or the depth of their personalities. There’s nothing bland or predictable about any of them. They’re all interesting and intriguing, making you want to know more about their history and what makes them tick. While there’s a great deal of action and political wrangling going on in this story as Charlotte, Lord Regret and Gilead try to survive, there’s also a good deal of high emotions – desire, passion and blistering hot sex. These two men are as different as different can be, making for some interesting encounters. Lady Doctor Wyre is a good mix of all these components, making for a fast paced and well balanced read.

I don’t know when to expect the next release in this new and intriguing series, but you can bet I’ll be watching for it. Read and enjoy!!

Himiko: Bonding

Matt is in the middle of a lecture when three Himika come to escort Matt to the alien’s harvesting, or human collection, compound. It is the last thing Matt remembers until he awakens in a windowless hospital room. Feeling better the next day, Matt is escorted to the dining room. As Matt rounded the corner his gaze is drawn to Pietr. When Pietr returns the intent look, something inside Matt shifted. Suddenly Matt senses that he must wrap himself in this man’s arms or perish; Pietr is his bonded mate.

Himiko: Bonding is an imaginative, as well as, intriguing story that features the development of Matt’s psyche capability. The detailed plot is well-paced, interwoven with humor and sensual lovemaking. There is also an inkling of mystery, or a hidden agenda, on the part of the aliens. The characters are credible. Matt created his own architectural firm because he is ambitious, plus he has anger management issues. He didn't like it when senior architects tried to steal his ideas. However, he is especially compassionate about the humanity of others. Matt is the first human to bond with a Himika, as well as being the first to be receptive to the alien’s concealed emotions. Matt’s instincts are considered unique by the aliens.

Pietr is smug, as well as sarcastic. Nevertheless, Pietr is exceedingly protective, which Matt finds annoying at times. Pietr supports all of Matt’s hard work while Matt is learning to communicate in the Himiko way. Pietr continuously demonstrates the immeasurable passion he has exclusively for Matt.

CB Conwy has created a superbly engaging, as well as, exciting saga that purposely leaves an opening for answers to questions like what is the aliens’ real agenda. How much power does Matt really have? I look forward to an upcoming sequel hopefully very soon.

Ghost from the Past

Every relationship has its problem and it’s during one of these rocky patches when Rio is feeling particularly upset with his partners that the bottom drops out. He receives a phone call from Chet, a man he once worked with, that turns his world upside down. Ghost – the lover he thought long dead is alive and he wants to see him.

Rio’s emotions are torn. He feels guilty for leaving the man he once loved behind in the jungle, but knows he must face Ghost before he can go back to his life with Ryan and Nate. The question is can he make amends for the events of ten years past and what happens when he learns Ghost wants him back? Where does that leave his partners and the life he’s made with them in Cattle Valley?

Ghost from the Past is release number twenty-two in Carol Lynne’s popular series, Cattle Valley. It’s a well-written and well-plotted book that focuses once again on the three interesting and dynamic men who started this series. There are lots of strong emotions and more than a little angst filtering through its pages as Rio tries to work through his issues with Ryan and Nate, while attempting to deal with the return of Ghost. I have to admit that this particular twist completely blindsided me, yet it wasn’t out of the realm of possibility. It also allowed a small look into Rio and Ryan’s mercenary past, which was a treat, and I’m really hoping that more of this is featured again in the future.

The sex between Rio, Ryan and Nate is just as hot and steamy as ever and Ms. Lynne did a nice job getting their relationship back on track just in time for a near tragedy to strike. I’m not giving away any details aside from to say I wasn’t expecting the event but that it was handled well. As with the other books in this series, numerous returning characters are seen throughout. There are a couple of new individuals introduced who I’m certain will be making an appearance in the future. I’m looking forward to the next release in this keeper series with Hawk’s Landing.

One would have thought that Richard and Rose had settled into a quiet married life with their daughter but instead, they are facing old and new enemies. This time, trouble comes in the form a young man coming forward claiming to be Richard’s son from the wild days during his youth. During all of the accusations being aimed at Richard, Rose is expecting, and he will not let anything interfere with her well being.

Before Richard gives in to the slanderous accusations thrown at him, he marshals his close friends and allies to defeat the attacks against him and he knows that without Rose by his side, he couldn’t survive. She adds to his strength and sanity by asking the right questions of him, supporting him wherever needed.

Maiden Lane is even better than the last book I read by Ms. Connolly and I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story! For one, the title is deceiving and I was thinking of something total different than what I read. Imagine my surprise after learning the meaning of the title! The one true villain amongst the other people wanting to harm Richard is an unbelievably wicked character.

This is the seventh book in the Richard and Rose series. There is so much going on throughout the story that you have to pay close attention to each of the details given. I must say that Ms. Connolly created a well plotted, suspenseful, loving story surrounding Richard and Rose and their everyday lives.

Richard and Rose are one of my favorite couples of the Historical books. The two of them are determined to make their marriage last, regardless of who tries to destroy the bond they have found together. They complement each other with their dedication, loyalty and love so much, it’s hard to think of Richard and Rose apart. The host of friends and family that surround them are remarkable themselves and add to the story nicely.

I won’t give away the ending but it had me laughing and thrilled to learn about Richard and Rose’s bundle of joy. This one will be added to my keeper list. Read and enjoy their story.

Carson is sitting on his balcony, crying after being dumped by his rich boyfriend when Eddie, the superintendent of Carson's apartment building walks up, presenting Carson with a beautiful red rose. That simple act of kindness is the beginning of change for Carson’s perspective on his life, as well as his future.

A Rose is a Rose is a well-written emotional rollercoaster romance. The characters are exceedingly believable. Carson is a beautiful young man who, upon first glance, looks like a delicate woman. His style of dress adds to the illusion. Working at a burlesque show, Carson lacks the talent to be a true performer; his job is for the visual effect in the show. On the surface, Carson appears to be nothing more than a conceited kept man, too self-important to consider a mere working man as a boyfriend. I was quite prepared to dismiss Carson as an insignificant worthless loser. However, as the story unfolds, Carson exhibits a more redeemable conduct.

Eddie is an average working man, in addition to being exceptionally considerate of others. Eddie is not wealthy; nevertheless he has a comfortable income for an ordinary lifestyle. Eddie is incredibly kindhearted as well as extraordinarily open-minded. Eddie clearly demonstrates an “it is what it is” outlook when he falls in love with Carson the person, not the gender illusions.

The amazing Jet Mykles has created a spectacular saga that captivates the heart and loads it with compassion for these realistic characters.

When Ron Winters’ aunt buys a big rambling house in the little town of Sebastian's Bluff, it’s the perfect place for the talented photojournalist to spend a few weeks taking photos. He expects to take dozens of rolls of film to fulfill his latest magazine contract -- he doesn’t expect to be attracted to the moody, and oftentimes, unfriendly man who lives nearby.

For nearly twenty years, Drew LaSalle has lived a life filled with pain, hurt and regrets. When Ron suddenly enters his world, he doesn’t know what to do, how to react or if he can open his heart enough to grasp what he desperately wants. The secrets of his past and the tragedy that continues to trouble his every waking minute keeps the door to a future with Ron firmly closed. The only hope Drew has of moving forward with his life is if he can find a way to exorcise the personal ghosts haunting him.

These Haunted Heights is the latest release by author Ally Blue. It’s a well written and plotted look into the lives of two men who, on first glance, probably never have a chance of making a lasting relationship.

The locale is well described, giving the reader a good feel for the beautiful seaside area, the small village and its people. The same goes for Drew and Ron – they are interesting and intriguing men. Ron is open and friendly – a traveler, a man who enjoys his job; while Drew is mired in the past, his life filled with secrets, pain and angst. Ms. Blue did a nice job with the men’s emotions. She quickly pulled the reader into the story, showing how the men’s attraction pulled them together into a deeper relationship despite Drew’s uneasiness and anger.

The growth of the personal side of Ron and Drew is uneven, filled with hurtful feelings and rocky patches…making it difficult to like Drew or to believe they’ll ever get together for the more than a hook-up. There is oftentimes just too much pain, meanness and hurt flying around. Yet Ms. Blue works her literary magic, managing to get Ron and Drew past the pain, secrets and betrayal destroying their future together. If you’re looking for a quick, happy-so-lucky read this isn’t it, but if you enjoy an angst-filled book with some emotional depth, then give this one a try.
